Leaves were steeped to produce a tea to relive fever and as a general tonic for hypertension. It is also used as an anti-inflammatory agent. Ripe fruits were eaten to combat parasites. Other benefits of ripe fruits are to treat stomach and urinary problems. The tea and fresh or ripe fruit is also used to combat diabetes. A poultice from a heated leaf and ripe fruit can be made to heal cuts, bruises, fracture, or breaks.
